Red flowering currant berries provide an excellent food source for birds, such as quail and grouse and mammals, such as deer and rabbits. The flowers provide an important nectar source for butterflies, moths, and other insects. However, Red flowering currant is an alternate host for white pine blister rust so it is of some concern to foresters.
