A common perennial growing up to 47 inches tall with bright yellow, daisy-like composite flower heads, often up to 2.5 inches across.

Identification hints

This flower occurs in both dry and moist soils in open woods, glades and thickets.  While the flower heads are often produced one per stem, it is not unusual to find them in arrays with 2 to 7 flowers per stem.

Did you know?

Similar in appearance and also commonly referred to as Black-eyed Susan, Rudbeckia hirta is an annual rather than perennial. These two, oft-confused, species provide an excellent example of the importance of referencing the scientific name for a plant.
